Hoy sólo he podido trabajar durante la tarde. He continuado con el cuadro Verano del 16 y he incluido un avión para reforzar la diagonal del cuadrado porque antes me parecía demasiado estático. También he avanzado algo en el otro cuadro que comencé en Cádiz.

Today I was only able to work during the afternoon. I continued working on the painting Summer of ’16 and added an airplane to reinforce the diagonal of the square, because it felt too static before. I also made some progress on the other painting I started in Cádiz.
I’ve started adding the decorations to the spiral.
Hoy ha sido un día de viaje desde Cádiz a Madrid. Cansado, ya en Madrid, he retomado el cuadro «Verano del 16» (el de los bañistas, que ya tiene título). No he podido hacer mucho. He repasado algo la anatomía con la ayuda de los libros e Internet.

Today was a travel day from Cádiz to Madrid. Tired, now back in Madrid, I picked up the painting ‘Summer of ’16’ again (the one with the bathers, which now has a title). I couldn’t do much. I went over some of the anatomy with the help of books and the Internet.
Hoy he pintado solo el cuadro de los bañistas puesto que era mi último día en Cádiz. He avanzado en el cielo y en los personajes. Por la tarde he salido con Jesús(1) y le he llevado a ver las exposiciones de Juan Luis Vassallo y de Costus.
Además, luego, con mi familia hemos ido a la Casa de Iberoamérica (antigua cárcel Real) y hemos visto la exposición permanente de José Félix Llopis que me ha sorprendido gratamente. La exposición cuenta con cuadros abstractos y naif. También hemos visto dos exposiciones temporales, una de Pablo Siebel muy colorista y otra de retratos de acuarela de Berta Llonch, una artista gaditana aunque afincada en Madrid.

Today I painted the bathers’ painting on my own, since it was my last day in Cádiz. I made progress on the sky and the figures. In the afternoon, I went out with Jesús(1) and took him to see the exhibitions of Juan Luis Vassallo and Costus.
Later, with my family, we went to the Casa de Iberoamérica (the former Royal Prison) and saw the permanent exhibition of José Félix Llopis, which pleasantly surprised me. The exhibition features abstract and naïve paintings. We also saw two temporary exhibitions: one by Pablo Siebel, very colourful, and another of watercolour portraits by Berta Llonch, an artist from Cádiz now based in Madrid.
Hoy he continuado con los dos cuadros a los que me he venido refiriendo en los días anteriores. Los dos acrílicos.
He ido trabajando los cuerpos pero me resulta complicado, además no me he traído ninguna anatomía con lo que no tengo referencias. Otra cosa con la que ando trabajando es con las olas del mar, presentes en mis últimos cuadros inventados.

Y bueno, poco más. Hoy es el penúltimo día que pasaremos en Cádiz, así que preveo que no llegaré a acabar ninguno de los cuadros. Se unirán al montón que tengo en Madrid a falta de rematar.
Bueno, comentar también que Sebastián(1) se ha comprado su primera caja de acuarelas. Como estaba gastando la mía, le aconsejé que se comprara una y así lo hizo. Al final se compró una Windsord and Newton, como la primera que yo tuve y que, por cierto, compré en el mismo lugar, una tienda en la plaza Mina que sigue existiendo (Piccolita).

Today, I continued working on the two paintings I’ve been referring to over the past few days. Both are acrylics.
I’ve been working on the bodies, but I find it challenging, especially since I didn’t bring any anatomy references with me. Another thing I am working on is the sea waves, which are present in my latest fictional paintings.
Well, not much more to say. Today is the second to last day we will spend in Cádiz, so I anticipate that I won’t be able to finish either of the paintings. They will join the pile I have in Madrid that needs final touches.
Also, it’s worth mentioning that Sebastian(1) bought his first set of watercolors. Since he was using mine, I advised him to buy one, and he did. In the end, he bought a Winsor and Newton set, just like the first one I had, which I also bought at the same place, a shop in Plaza Mina that is still there (Piccolita).
Hoy he continuado con el cuadro del que he estado hablando. El de la chica con el pantalón vaquero. Pero, al mediodía decidí comenzar otro lienzo cuadrado que traje también para este viaje (traje tres lienzos, dos rectangulares y uno cuadrado).

El cuadro tiene que ver con lo que he estado viendo estos días en la playa. Son tres bañistas, una pareja y un tercero que está dando un salto en el aire1.

Today I continued with the painting I’ve been talking about. The one with the girl in jeans. But at noon, I decided to start another square canvas that I also brought for this trip (I brought three canvases, two rectangular and one square).
The painting is related to what I’ve been seeing these days at the beach. There are three bathers, a couple, and a third person who is jumping in the air1.
Hoy he ido a ver dos exposiciones. La primera del escultor gaditano Juan Luis Vassallo Parodi me ha sorprendido gratamente. Me ha sorprendido también que la exposición estuviera vacía… No había nadie. Estaba en lo que ahora llaman Centro Cultural Reina Sofía, que antes era el Gobierno Militar. He visto la que supongo que fue escultura original de Minerva (Atenea) que está actualmente en lo alto del Círculo de Bellas Artes en Madrid. También he visto a Gades, la escultura que actualmente está en el paseo marítimo de Cádiz. Había varios bustos, dibujos, monedas, etc.

Luego fuimos a la exposición de Costus, del Valle de los Caídos, que compró el ayuntamiento hace unos años. Yo ya había visto la exposición en el Castillo de Santa Catalina. De nuevo me ha sorprendido que nadie estuviera visitándola… Vacío.

Today I went to see two exhibitions. The first one, by the Cádiz sculptor Juan Luis Vassallo Parodi, pleasantly surprised me. I was also surprised that the exhibition was empty… There was no one there. It was at what is now called the Reina Sofía Cultural Center, which used to be the Military Government building. I saw what I suppose was the original sculpture of Minerva (Athena), which is currently atop the Círculo de Bellas Artes in Madrid. I also saw Gades, the sculpture that is currently on the promenade in Cádiz. There were several busts, drawings, coins, etc.
Then we went to the Costus exhibition from the Valle de los Caídos, which the city council bought a few years ago. I had already seen the exhibition at Santa Catalina Castle. Again, I was surprised that no one was visiting it… Empty
Hoy he continuado con el cuadro del que hable ayer y al que todavía no he puesto nombre. Está pintado con acrílico y todavía no me manejo muy bien con esta técnica. En todo caso, está resultando complicada su resolución. Hay un tema central que partió con un esquema en espiral y varios temas secundarios en los laterales. Como el inicio fue azaroso, ahora me cuesta encajar las partes y darles una unión, un nexo común.

Hoy mientras corría (1) vi una exposición en la Cárcel Real. Trataré de ir a verla antes de irme.

Today I continued with the painting I mentioned yesterday, to which I still haven’t given a name. It’s painted with acrylics, and I’m still not very adept with this technique. Nonetheless, resolving it is proving to be quite complicated. There’s a central theme that began with a spiral outline and several secondary themes on the sides. Since the start was arbitrary, now I find it difficult to fit the parts together and give them a common connection.
Today, while I was out running (1), I saw an exhibition at the Royal Jail. I’ll try to visit it before I leave.
(1) During these vacation days, I used to run around the old town of Cádiz. The former Royal Jail has been converted into a museum.
Comienzo a escribir este diario en Cádiz, mientras estoy de vacaciones y donde me he traído unos lienzos pequeños y un bloc exclusivo de acuarela y otro de esbozos y acuarela.
Primer esbozo de la pintura «Espiral»
El pasado sábado tras llegar a Huetor-Tajar desde Madrid comencé una acuarela que todavía no he terminado (1) . Representa una mujer con un fondo con manchas de colores. Hay varios contrastes entre colores complementarios. No estoy todavía muy conforme con esta acuarela. Al tratarse de una idea sin mucho, bueno realmente sin ningún análisis previo, pues luego todo se complica.
Hoy también me he decidido a comenzar uno de los lienzos que tenía preparados. Tampoco he hecho ningún estudio antes de ponerme. Ha sido un poco automático y no sé si llegará a buen puerto. El cuadro tiene los elementos comunes en mi pintura (2). Varias mujeres aunque una es la principal, el mar y un hombre similar en postura a la mujer de «Los turistas diletantes«

I begin writing this journal in Cádiz, while I am on vacation and where I have brought some small canvases and an exclusive watercolor pad and another one for sketches and watercolors.

Last Saturday, after arriving in Huetor-Tajar from Madrid, I started a watercolor that I have not finished yet. It depicts a woman against a background with splashes of colors. There are several contrasts between complementary colors. I am not entirely satisfied with this watercolor yet. Since it is an idea without much, well, actually without any previous analysis, everything then becomes complicated.
Today, I also decided to start one of the canvases that I had prepared. I haven’t done any study before starting. It has been a bit automatic, and I don’t know if it will turn out well. The painting has the common elements in my work (2). Several women, although one is the main figure, the sea, and a man similar in posture to the woman in «The Dilettante Tourists».
